WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE 80s
...the good old days... The 80s... It was a time when all we sang were Michael Jackson's "Beat It" and "Billy Jean" and "We are the World" was the best song in the universe. Lionel Ritchie's "Dancing on the Ceiling" was the coolest MTV, and we didn't understand all the fuss about Madonna's iron tits. Cyndi Lauper and Boy George were the weirdest looking people around. Tiffany was every boy's dream girl and Tommy Page was the guy every girl wanted to marry, until New Kids on the Block surfaced. London Boys' dance routines were the best, and Johnny Hates Jazz "I don't want to be a Hero" was the song we swore by. Freddie Mercury wasn't a singer in Queen but Flash Gordon himself. Battlestar Galactica and Voltes V were how we visualized the future, and we watched them because they looked great though we didn't understand the storylines. We watched the Love Boat because all the adults were watching it although we didn't find it funny. The shiny black talking car in Knight Rider was the car we wanted to own when we grew up and the helicopter in Airwolf couldn't be destroyed except for a hole, the size of a bullet. The Return of the Jedi and his luminous sword were our defense from anything that is evil and the saga continues for the Starwars. The Last Starfighter and Back to the Future were our favorite movies and the flimsy Tron plastic cups they gave away at Burger King were our most prized possessions. We thought that Ultraman was cool though we could see the zippers on the back of the monsters. King Kong was the scariest movie we saw. Missing Sesame Street and The Electric Company was a mortal sin and we would shout all the top of our voices when the Count started counting his bats or when Big Bird started singing the alphabet. We blushed and became uncomfortable at any kiss on the TV screen. John Travolta was King on Saturday Night Fever and we knew every line in our played-to-death Grease cassette tapes. All we remember of Superman was that he could fly. Boy's favorite cartoons were Mask and GI Joe and if we did not own at least a dozen of the action figures, we were incomplete persons (and our parents were evil). Our imaginations were limitless: headquarters was a cave under the dining table and the kitchen sink was the enemy's hideout. We memorized by heart all the verses in Visionaries and knew which robots belonged to the Autobots and which belonged to the Decepticons, not to mention knowing the names of ALL the robots in the Transformers. Smurfette was the ideal girl. We were amazed by the Rubik's Cube and prided ourselves in being able to do one side. Anyone who could complete it was god. Well, we still amazed. Girl's favorites were Strawberry Shortcake and Smurfs. The Carebear Countdown was their inspiration and they knew what sort of colors and stuff would fly out of their bellies when they stood in a row. Gargamel was like a particular uncle they knew. They aspired to become Barbie when they grew up, to live a big pink houses, own plastic furniture, and thought that Ken was the hunkiest guy around. Teddy Bears promised that they would stay with us forever and never run away. The 80s was a time when books were read and re-read to death. We've all loved Enid Blyton's books. We felt angry when Elizabeth (The Naughtiest Girl in School) was wrongly accused of something she didn't do, and we would sit in the toilet lost in The Faraway Tree and the Wishing Chair, together with Moonface and the Saucepan man, for hours on end until mum demanded we come out. We prided ourselves in having read all the books printed on the back of the bright blue hard covers and to our parents' dismay, we had to own every single one of them. We all wished we were Charlie and wondered what the Oompa Loompas would feel like when we bashed them up. And we could not, for our lives, understand why the adults read books with no pictures in them. Sleeping over at a friend's place was the event of the month. A cup of milk and a plate of chocolate chip cookies were a complete meal and a proper diet. A box of crayons and plain sheets of white paper were enough to built vast empires. Hunting for spiders (and anything else that moved) in the bushes was adventure in its own right. Your friend's friend was your friend, your friend's enemy was your enemy, your enemy's friend was your enemy, and your enemy's enemy was your friend. We couldn't understand our older brothers were so crazy over fast cars and other girls, and why our older sisters wore perfume and make-up. The 80s, that's the time when friendships were made in the morning, broken in the afternoon, and remade in the evening. A time when having the same interest and hobbies qualified you as a friend. A time when most of our toys didn't have to have electricity running through them to keep us amused. If anything was wrong in the 80s, we cared not for we lived for that day, and that day only. But most importantly for us 80s children, it was a magical era; where the world seemed to hang in a suspended state of transition... a time when the people we met and the friends we made are the ones who will stay with us till kingdom comes. Until the assassination of Ninoy... Until the EDSA People's Power Revolution came... And our world will never be the same again... But the Spirit of EDSA lives on! REFORM THE AKP
Our Fellow Skeptrons: We are here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our brothers and sisters who were ahead of us in this great fraternity. Thanks to all of you who have traveled with us in this journey of hope and change. We all made this journey for a reason. It?s humbling, but in our heart we know you didn?t join the Brotherhood just for fun, you came and join us because you believe in what this organization can be. In the face of fraternal animosities, you believe there can be peace. In the face of despair, you believe there can be hope. In the face of the divisive fraternal politics that divided us for too long, you believe we can be one fraternity searching for what?s the truth and possible, building that more perfect solidarity and union. And that is the journey we are on today. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our Brotherhood is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our organization is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the Brotherhood for a new age and wider horizon of community and humanitarian service. Today, we say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or be solved in a short period of time. In our quest for truth, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. We bind together as one to proclaim an end to petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, the corruption that for far too long have strangled our fraternity. We remain a young organization, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to affirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift and noble ideas, passed on from brothers to brothers; from sisters to sisters; the God given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of joy and happiness. In reaffirming the greatness of our fraternity, we understand that greatness is never given in a silver tray. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or setting for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted --- for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things --- some celebrated but more often nameless men and women obscure in their passion and love for AKP, which have carried us up the long, rugged path towards unity and change. Time and again our brothers and sisters struggled and sacrificed and worked and lay their lives on the line so that we might live a better life and our organization continues to expand and grow. They saw the Alpha Kappa Rho as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; as greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction. For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of our fraternity calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act --- not only to reform the AKP but to lay a foundation for good governance. We will create livelihood programs and established scholarship and technical trainings. And we will transform our chapters to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do. We nurture the growth of this great fraternity of ours. We understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, we should know that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint. We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort --- even greater cooperation and understanding between chapters and councils and for those who seek to advance their wicked agendas by inducing terror and blackmails and threats, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you. Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends --- honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and integrity --- these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. For we believe in the maxim, vincit omnia veritas. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility --- a recognition, on the part of every Skeptron, that we have duties to ourselves, our fraternity and our nation, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of being a Skeptron. This is the source of our confidence --- the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. We should reform the AKP and we should reform it now! In the face of our common dangers, in this time of hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the turbulent currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by the future Skeptrons that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God?s grace upon us, we carried forth the great gift of freedom and wind of change and delivered it safely to future Skeptrons. God bless Alpha Kappa Rho! God Bless us all! BROD JEDI Founding Member AKP - NASAP By Bro. Arc Canoy at Saturday 23 January 2010

To all Skeptrons, Our brother, Dr. Renato Fernando ?Doc? L. Mallonga, was finally laid to rest yesterday, January 10, 2010. He might have led a short life, but it surely was a very exciting and fast journey to meet his Maker. Last Saturday, Jan. 9, your frat gave him a "Gabi ng Parangal." The tribute uncovered a lot of things that we, Ronnie's siblings, did not know about him. We were so surprised and pleased to know that our brother cared for so many people, not just family... he cared most for others. The ?Parangal? revealed to us Ronnie's deeply ingrained love for his brothers and sisters in your fraternity. He aspired for peace for his frat even at the height of his indulgence with drugs. He carried the weight of pursuing a united AKRHO and went over and beyond his call of duty. He cared for his brods and sis so much that he utilized our family's finances (to the ire of our Papa Danding). Ronnie may have been a brat to us his biological family, but to some AkRho former students, he was and still is their ?Tatay?. A roller coaster ride, he had for more than 40 years... until he had a stroke in 2004. This led Ronnie to lie low and he was given a chance by the Lord to ponder. Towards the end, God gave Ronnie time to contemplate on all the things that transpired during his short and speedy existence. He spent his last nine months getting to know intimately the Catholic Church. He went back to the one true church and to his one true God. Ronnie is now at rest. Praise be our beloved Almighty God! Thank you Father God for the gift of Ronnie. May his good side be known by all AkRho members so that the peace he dreamed and fought for will reign in his most beloved frat. Thank you AkRho brods and sis who went to his wake and helped us give Ronnie the wake and burial he truly deserved. We would like to particularly mention the following brods: Brods. Sammy Coral, Lance Magpoc, Jun I., Jayson Mora, Jedi, Ronald S., Phil C., Tocs, Jo, Alexa, Gladys, Budz, Daboy, Obet de Lara, Jessmel, William, Obet of QC and so many others whom we were not able to personally talk with because there were so many of you. Ronnie must have been not just smiling, he must be laughing out loud (lol)!!! He must have been so very happy to see all of you during his wake. Up to his cremation, AkRho was there ? two of the assistants of Eternal Gardens Crematorium, we were pleasantly informed, are AkRho members. God bless and keep all of you. Again, our deepest gratitude to all of you. THE FAMILY OF RENATO FERNANDO ?DOC? L. MALLONGA By Jedi ( N A S A P ) at Tuesday 12 January 2010

A POEM ABOUT BROTHERHOOD
The crest and crowning of all good, Life's final star, is Brotherhood; For it will bring again to earth Her long-lost Poesy and Mirth; Will send new light on every face, A kingly power upon the race. And till it comes, we men are slaves, And travel downward to the dust of graves. Come, clear the way, then, clear the way: Blind creeds and kings have had their day. Break the dead branches from the path: Our hope is in the aftermath- Our hope is in heroic men, Star-led to build the world again. To this event the ages ran: Make way for Brotherhood- make way for Man! By beans (polangui) at Tuesday 15 December 2009
THE GOLD WRAPPING PAPER - An Inspiring Christmas Story
Once upon a time, a man punished his five-year-old daughter for using up the family?s only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper before Christmas. Money was tight, so he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve, he saw that the child had used the expensive gold paper to decorate a large shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!" As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her. But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady,? he said harshly, ?when you give someone a present there's supposed to be something inside the package!" The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there. In a very real sense, each of us as human beings have been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends and God. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold. By Bong Garcia at Sunday 13 December 2009
